Bangla seeks India aid to restructure BDR
NEW DELHI: Getting wiser from the bloody mutiny, Bangladesh has sought India's help in both renaming and restructuring the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), the force responsible for the attempted coup that left nearly 100 of its top Army officers dead. The issue of restructuring BDR is likely to come up during a potential visit by top government officers to Dhaka in July, sources said.In the face of the ghastly BDR experience, the impeccable non-violent and disciplined history of the Indian armed forces has once again prompted Bangladesh to look towards the structures of Indian paramilitary forces and also to the army that has substantial mechanisms in place to prevent mutiny."What should be the constitution of the BDR, what would be its command structure, how to integrate it with the intelligence set-up or whether to integrate it at all. These are some of the questions Dhaka is facing after the Army-BDR showdown and wants us to pitch in," said a home ministry source. There is likelihood of the renamed force recruiting jawans from the country's rapid action battalions and the armed police. At the same time, the army would retain the overall control. With the name evoking gory memories, the BDR may be changed to Bangladesh Border Guarding Force (BDGF) or the Bangla National Force.Although the two sides would be taking up the usual border issues such as 150 yards fencing, infiltration and Bangladesh based Indian Insurgent Groups, an "informal" discussion on the topic is almost certain, sources said.
