Vacancies in Railways

New Delhi: April 30, 2010

 

There are 169813 vacancies in Railways as on 1st April 2009. A total number of 10395 posts of SCs and 12491 posts of STs were identified as lying vacant as on 1-11-2008 including in Group 'A'. There are 1166 SC and 615 ST employees in Group 'A' as on 31-3-2009.

 

Streamlining of the working of Railway Recruitment Boards has been undertaken. Under the new methodology, examination for a particular post will be held on the same date simultaneously by all the Railway Recruitment Boards and in addition to Hindi, Urdu and English, question papers shall be set in local languages.

 

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways, Shri E. Ahamed in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.

Utilization of Surplus Railway Land for Mobilizing Resources

New Delhi: April 30, 2010

 

Indian Railways have approximately 10.65 lakh acre of land. About 90 per cent of this land is under Railway's operational and allied usages. The land which is presently vacant is generally required for Railways' own development works such as setting up of Rail Coach and Component factories. Loco Component factories, Wagon factories, Coach Rehabilitation and Wagon Repair Workshops, Multi-Model Logistic Parks, Auto hubs, Cold Storages and Perishable Cargo centres, Refrigerated Container factories, Eco-parks, Health Care facilities, Bottling Plants for clean drinking water etc., as well as for doubling, gauge conversions, yard re-modeling and traffic facility works, freight corridors and also for servicing the track and other infrastructure.

 

Moreover, Railway land/air space not required by Railways for its immediate future operational needs is also proposed to be utilized for commercial development, wherever feasible, for generation of additional financial resources to fund Railway projects.

Railways' Catering Policy under Review

New Delhi: April 30, 2010

 

For bringing about overall improvement in the quality of railway catering, the catering policy is being reviewed by the Ministry of Railways. Temporarily, however, the supervision of catering services on a few trains is being undertaken by Railways on an experimental basis.

 

As per present catering policy, a firm/company or an individual can hold a maximum of 15 per cent of any category of major units. At present there are 36 different licensees managing pantry car licences on 263 different trains which have been licensed out to private licensee. The ceiling limits laid down in the policy are being adhered to.

DLW, RCF & RWF Exceed Production Target during Fiscal 2009-10

New Delhi: April 30, 2010

 

Chitranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) produced 220 electric locomotives against the target of 230 electric locomotives and Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) produced 258 diesel locomotives against the target of 250 diesel locomotives during the fiscal 2009-10. Rail Coach Factory (RCF) produced 1568 coaches against the target of 1562 coaches where as Integral Coach Factory (ICF) produced 1433 coaches against the target of 1433 coaches during the same period. Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) produced 187450 wheels and 65302 axles against the target of 186000 wheels and 70320 axles during the financial year 2009-10.

During the month of March 2010, CLW, DLW, ICF, RCF and RWF have produced 23 electric locomotives, 18 diesel locomotive, 166 coaches, 151 coaches, 15715 wheels and 957 axles respectively against the target of 28 electric locomotives, 19 diesel locomotive, 166 coaches, 146 coaches, 15395 wheels and 5324 axels.

Railways have realized an amount of Rs. 370.68 crore approximately during the financial year 2009-10 through ticket checking compared to 316.32 crore approximately during 2008-09.

Railway Revenue Earnings up by 9.60 Per Cent During the Period 11th – 20th April 2010

New Delhi: April 30, 2010

 

The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during the period 11th April – 20th April, 2010 were Rs. 2420.05 crore compared to Rs. 2208.07 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 9.60 per cent.

 

The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 1510.52 crore during 11th April – 20th April 2009 to Rs. 1643.26 crore during 11th April – 20th April 2010, showing an increase of 8.79 per cent. The total passenger revenue earnings during the period 11th to 20th April 2010 were Rs. 693.24 crore compared to Rs. 608.94 crore during the same period last year, reflecting an increase of 13.84 per cent. The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 66.23 crore during this period compared to Rs. 65.27 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 1.47 per cent.

 

The total approximate number of passengers booked during the period 11th to 20th April 2010 were 212.31 million compared to 203.75 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.20 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during 11–20 April 2010 were 111.15 million and 101.16 million respectively compared to 109.44 million and 94.31 million during the same period last year, registering an increase of 1.56 per cent and 7.26 per cent respectively.
