Subject: Fwd: press invite for 3rd March (Revised)

The Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP)

invites you to a

Press Conference on the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project

The Jaitapur nuclear power project in Maharashtra's Konkan coast is in the limelight because of strong popular protests against it. On February 26, Chief Minister Prithhviraj Chavan visited the area, but failed to answer the questions raised by the project's opponents, over 5,000 of whom had gathered. Instead, he blamed "foreign powers" for misleading the public.

The project is highly controversial because it is

·

located in a unique ecosystem, one of the world's 10 greatest "biodiversity hotspots"

·

based on an untested reactor design of the French-origin company Areva, which has run into major safety and cost-overrun issues in Europe

·

will affect the livelihoods of 40,000 people and pose hazards to many more for long periods of time.

To suppress popular opposition, the government has unleashed repression, including arbitrary arrests, externment notices, and bans on eminent citizens wanting to visit Jaitapur.

A CNDP team recently visited the area, along with former Planning Commission member SP Shukla.

CNDP will release a booklet analysing the project, based on the visit, at the Press Conference.

The Press Conference will be addressed by former Chief of the Naval Staff and CNDP member Admiral L Ramdas, SP Shukla, Vaishali Patil, a Konkan-based environmental activist, and columnist and CNDP activist Praful Bidwai, amongst others.

Venue: Indian Women's Press Corps

5, Windsor Place

(between Meridien and Shangri-La Hotels)

New Delhi 110001 (Phone: 2332 5366, 2332 1005)

Time: 3 pm, Thursday, March 3

CNDP urges you to attend the Press Conference and cover the Jaitapur issue in depth.
