HYDERABAD: CPI(M)'sAndhra Pradesh Secretary B V Raghavulu and three other party leaders todaycalled off their six-day-old fast over issues of Dalit and tribal welfarefollowing an assurance from the Government to take steps for addressing them.

CPI(M) Politburomember Brinda Karat offered lemon juice to Raghavulu and the other partyleaders at Indira Park here where they started the hunger strike last week.

Raghavulu and theothers ended the fast after Minister for Social Welfare P Satyanarayana andMinister for Tribal Welfare P Balaraju held talks with them at the state-runGandhi hospital here.

Speaking later,Raghavulu said the Government assured to take steps for addressing the issuesraised by him and also consult intellectuals and administrators for thepurpose.

Observing that theagitation started by the party has succeeded to some extent, he, however, saidstruggles needed to be continued for ensuring that the Dalits, tribals andothers got a better deal.

Though the Telanganaissue dominated the agenda of all parties in the state, they should also workon various burning issues of public concern, Raghavulu said.

Karat warned theCPI(M) would resume the agitation if the Government failed to implement theassurances given by it.

Alleging that thewelfare of Dalits and others did not get adequate attention from theGovernments, she said the Centre was ready to forgo funds through taxes on therich, but was ignoring the weaker sections.
