Association for India's Development (AID)statement

AID condemns police action on peaceful citizens on Ramlila grounds

June 8, 2011

College Park, MD

Association for India's Development strongly condemns the use of force by the government on citizens who had peacefully gathered on Ramlila grounds in Delhi demanding strong actions against corruption. A stealth attack of this nature by the police in the middle of the night is uncalled for and impinges upon the fundamental democratic right to gather peacefully.

AID actively engages with civil society groups to fight against corruption. While not being directly aligned with the campaign led by Baba Ramdev, AID is alarmed by the increasingly violent response of the state to peaceful dissent throughout the country.

In Jagatsinghpur, Golibar and other places throughout the country people risk losing land, homes and livelihoods due to large scale corruption.  Their peaceful struggles represent an abiding hope that our democracy can rise to the challenge, uphold people's rights and the rule of law.
