Dear Friends:

Greetings from Kanyakumari, the end of India!

As you may have noticed, no political party or "leader" talks about the nuclear issue and none of them seems to consider it as an important poll issue. A few of us organized a press conference on April 13, 2009 in New Delhi on the "Nuclear Threat to India." Although it was well-attended, no editor chose to run a story on the nuclear issue. Some of us went to a few party offices and newspaper premises just to push the nuclear issue into the poll arena. They all invariably claimed that they were busy with the elections and had no time for the nuclear issue. We wished the poor and illiterate masses of India good luck and left Delhi.

After one of the one hundred potential prime ministers assumes charge (hopefully !) in the third week of May, the new New Delhi dispensation will certainly continue with the nucolonization (nuclear + colonization) of India. With a Russian outpost in Koodankulam, a French settlement in Jaitapur, and an American joint in Haripur, our country will look and feel like the colony of a new East India Company. We, the citizens of India, may have to behave like the energy slaves of these White and Brown power barons.

It is high time we discussed the ongoing developments and the upcoming dangers, and devised a national strategy to confront the nucolonization of our country and our futures.
So we are planning to organize a National Convention on "The Politics of Nuclear Energy and Resistance" on June 4, 5, 6 (Thu, Fri, Sat) 2009 at Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu.

We will cover your room and board and local transportation costs here in Kanyakumari. Please plan on reaching Kanyakumari on June 3rd and leaving on June 6th evening or 7th morning. Unfortunately, we are unable to cover your travelling costs.

This will be a strategy-oriented convention rather than a talking-forum and it will focus on national networking and activism. On june 6th early morning, we plan to march to the Koodankulam nuclear power plant to express our opposition and hold the National Coordination Council (NCC) meeting of the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP).

Please do come to attend the  convnetion and request your comrades who are struggling against uranium mining, nuclear power plants, bomb programs and other such evil and destructive projects to come also.

Kanyakumari has a railway station. But many express trains come only upto Thiruvananthapuram or Nagercoil Junction. The closest airport is either Thiruvananthapuram (in Kerala) or Thoothukudi (in Tamil Nadu). From Thiruvananthapuram, it is a 2.5 hour bus/car ride to Kanyakumari.

The first week of June usually witnesses the onset of monsoon here in the southern tip but you never know in this day and age of climate change. However, an umbrella could be useful. You may not need any warm clothes though.

We would appreciate if you could let us know about your participation as soon as possible so that we can make the local arrangements. If you are part of CNDP, please do let their Delhi office also know (011-26517814/65663958).

We very much look forward to seeing you here in Kanyakumari.
