Industries flout pollution control norms in Bharuch

Indian Express - Anupam Chakravartty Sunday , April 25, 2010  Vadodara:

Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) at Sachin in Surat district and Final Effluent Treatment Plants in Panoli of Bharuch district have flouted pollution control norms. This is despite the cautionary notices served to treatment plants, and recommendations to units in the chemical corridor by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).

In a recent reply to a Right To Information (RTI) query filed by Vadodara-based activist Rohit Prajapati, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) revealed that not just outlet norms but even inlet norms were violated by the treatment facilities. The RTI reply on April 5 to Gujarat Enviro Protection and Infrastructure situated in Gabheni village of Sachin taluka suggests that repairs would not be possible unless the CETP is closed.

o?=The feeding arrangements for solid hazardous waste are not proper. Heavy leakage of emission from the rear end of the kiln makes it difficult for incinerator operator to stand near the solid waste feeding area. Besides, no fire clearances are obtained and no records pertaining to the effluent treatment plant are maintained by the officials,o?= said CPCB Chairman S P Gautam after a team comprising GPCB and CPCB officials visited the area in December.

On the other hand, pond and dam water in Gabheni village was found contaminated, revealed the RTI reply. o?=The water accumulated in the ponds and dams in the low lying area on the western flank was found contaminated with high concentration of Chemical Oxygen in Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen on Demand (BOD),o?= said CPCB officials after monitoring the site in April.

Panoli taluka in Bharuch district, where about 18 farmers were reportedly arrested during a scuffle with the unit owners and GPCB officials on the issue of dumping waste on a water creek, remains polluted. This is because hazardous wastes were dumped in water by the Panoli Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation, says the CPCB report sent to the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Last month, CPCB and GPCB officials had seen rampant violation of environmental norms at seven locations including community wells in Sanjali village in Bharuch district. o?=The water is polluted because of seepage from drains carrying effluents. High levels of TDS, hardness, sulphate and chloride are found in the analysis,o?= said CPCB in its report.
