To hoist tricolor in presence of soldiers no bravery: Geelani

ARIF SHAFI WANI

Srinagar, Jan 24: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday described Bharitiya Janta Party's rigidity to hoist a tricolor at Lal Chowk on January 26 as a gimmick.

"BJP hoisting a flag in presence of 10 lakh soldiers in the Valley is no brave act and there is nothing courageous about it. The pro-Indian parties have been instrumental in suppressing the right of self-determination and aspirations of Kashmiris in the disguise of their so-called national interests," Geelani told Greater Kashmir.

He maintained that conglomerate's standing policy was to peacefully carry forward the ongoing movement. "Despite instigation by India, we have been urging the people to keep their protests peaceful and even refrain from raising provocative slogans during demonstrations. This was evident during the last year's summer unrest where 112 unarmed youth and teenagers fell to the bullets while none of force personnel and cops were killed. This has infuriated the Indian leadership and communal parties including BJP who are hell bent upon instigating Kashmiris by their communal politics," he added.

Geelani said instead of implementing his five points including accepting Kashmir as a dispute, releasing all the Kashmiris languishing in jails and demilitarization to improve the situation, New Delhi has given "free hands to its forces and communal parties to suppress the ongoing peaceful movement."

"Kashmir dispute will linger on till last Indian soldier leaves the state. But I want to maintain that more than the soldiers the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been at the forefront of unleashing atrocities on the Kashmiris. The cops are behaving as more loyal than the king. I want to tell them that history and future generation of Kashmir will never forgive them," he said.

He said unless there is complete demilitarization of the state, Kashmir dispute can't be resolved. "People of the Valley and the Muslim dominated areas of Jammu are being executed with impunity and feeling humiliated in presence of the forces. The conglomerate had started a campaign last year to press for demilitarization. However the force personnel tried to muzzle it by use of brute force and killing of 112 civilians. There are many offshoots to the forces presence in the state. They want to wipe our identity, culture and aspirations but we are committed to foil their evil designs," he said.
