Grand Alliance against What?

Press Release

London, July 6. Rifah party welcomes the exit of MQM from the ruling coalition. The focus of the Charter of Democracy (COD) signed by late Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif was on two points: 1) precluding the judges ever endorsing a military take over, 2) refusal to deal with terrorists of the MQM.  After the death of Benazir, her husband went back on both points. He tried his best to avoid restoring the Judges of the Supreme Court General Musharraf had suspended and incarcerated, and he eagerly sought political marriage with the MQM.   That was the new style in politics that President Asif Zardari introduced. He submitted to the powerful forces when required only to go back on the commitments and promises as soon as he could. Real politics has since forced him to accept that real power flows from adherence to some principles. Benazir's was guided by her well honed political instincts; Asif Zardari has come to realise that her politics had a sounder foundation. He has since restored the incarcerated judges and has driven the MQM out of the ruling coalition. He has a very good chance to restore peace in Karachi as his late wife did by giving responsibility to late General Nasirullah Babar. With the PML(Q) as a formidable and dependable coalition partner his grip over power is more secure.

What is surprising is that PML(N) has decided to react to the ouster of MQM from Government by embracing it in a 'grand alliance' of the opposition. That is unprincipled, counter-productive and even silly. The COD may not be much of a document but its two objectives enjoy wide public support. Besides,  ut is amazing how easily Mian Nawaz Sharif  has forgotten the insults hurled upon him by Altaf Bhai portraying him as a baby on a feeder held to his mouth by General Jeelani. Imran Khan, leader of TI and Munawwar Hasan leader of JI, have proved to be honourable men who refused to align themselves with foul mouthed  blackmailing MQM. There is a need for a 'grand alliance' of the opposition to combat CORRPTION and TERRORISM but it MUST NOT BETRTAY the constituency of the parties entering the alliance. MQM is responsible for the murders and mayhem in Karachi. While Baloch and Sindhi nationalists have roots in Pakistan and can be dealt with politically, there is no hope for dealing with the MQM in the same way. MQM was the core support of dictator Musharraf while the basis of PML(Q) supporting Musharraf was political opportunism. It was right to spurn the MQM when signing the COD and it is right to do it now. If PML(N) persists in seeking marriage with the MQM, Rifah Pary calls upon the TI and JI to invite all  political parties including the PPP to join a grand alliance  against corruption and terrorism. There is little  support for early election but the public would support a campaign against terrorism ( by the TTP or the MQM). It is wise to invite the PPP to perform rather than engage in futile agitation with popular purpose.
