UGC resolution comes as relief for teachers

MUMBAI: In what comes as a relief for thousands of teachers from Maharashtra who were denied promotions, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has exempted teachers hired between 1991 and 2000 from clearing the NET/SET exam.

The UGC, in a resolution passed in the last week of August, has allowed universities to consider the service of teachers who have been hired between September 19, 1991 and April 3, 2000 as regular from their date of joining.

After the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers' Organization staged protests in Delhi, the UGC passed the resolution on August 26. Teachers hired between 1991 and 2000 need not appear for the NET/SET as a compulsory qualification. An office-bearer of MFUCTO said, "The order has come as major relief for many teachers who were affected by the policy. Though UGC passed the order in 1991, Maharashtra, as well as other states, implemented it much later. Careers of several teachers were blocked after the eligibility criteria was made compulsory by the state not only for future but also for teachers appointed on or after September 19, 1991."
