AN INTRODUCTION TO

THE INDIAFORUM OF MUSLIM JOURNALISTS

The Forum was formed on the 9th of July 1990 in Chennai with Janab A,K,A.Abdus
Samad, Muslim League M.P. who edited and published a Tamil journal entitled
"MANI CHUDAR" as its PATRON-IN-CHIEF and S.M.PASHA – a Free lance journalist- as
its FOUNDER-PRESIDENT.

The aims and objectives of the Forum are:

PREAMBLE

RESPONDING to the clarion call of the Quran and the Sunnah with a view to
emancipating human minds from the bond and human hearts from the cant of
Jahallaiyah (ignorance,false beliefs and perverse actions);

FEELINGstrongly that there is an imperative need for a change in our way of life
– a change which would not become an instrument of disequilibrium within man
and in society but one which would produce a new and a better man and a new and
a better society, committed to Allah Subhanatha'llah and the welfare of His
creations;

BEING convinced that the Islamic Shariah (way of life) alone cam bring about a
revolutionary change through smooth evolutionary trajectory;

BEING desirous of assisting fellow-beings in general and fellow-journalists in
particular and mire especially Muslim journalists , to create in them an acute
desire for a noble and happier life with a high standard of individual, social,
economic and spiritual welfare but also for the collective well-being and
happiness of the entire humanity;

PLACINGthis cherished goal ahead and

PLEDGINGto achievethe said goal through all possible and available non-violent,
democratic and Islamic ways and means

WE, THE FIRST MEMBERS OF THE ALL INDIAFORUM OF MUSLIM JOURNALISTS HAVE FORMED
THIS ORGANISATION AS AN ASSOCIATION ON PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISTIC
ETHICS AND ESTABLISHMENT OF UNITY AND UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD AMONG THE PEOPLES OF
THE WORLD AND JUSTOCE, LOVE AND COMPASSION IN THE WORLD.

OBJECTIVES

1. to encourage and assist journalists in general and Muslim journalists
in particular to report news and present views accurately and truthfully without
fear or favour so that they may not transgress due balance;

2. to seek to promote the establishment of fraternal relationship and
rapport between Muslim and non-Muslim journalists in general and Muslim
journalists in particular;

3. to protect the legitimate rights and interests of journalists in
general

Muslim journalists in particular and

4. to do all such acts as are conducive or incidental to the attainment
of

the above-mentioned objectives or any of them.

At present there are 87 Members on rolls hailing from almost all the major
States in the country with State Conveners in Amdhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala,
West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Bihar, U.P and New Delhi

Note: Those desirous of joining the Forum have to submit a sworn the
Islamic journalistic CODE OF CONDUCT Affidavit along with the prescribed
Membership Application Form a CROSSED BANK DRAFT FOR A SUM OF RUPEES ONE
THOUSAND AND ONE ONLY ( Rs.1001/-) IN FAVOUR OF S.M.PASHA ( who is, at present,
the ALL INDIA CONVENER pending registration.)

THE AFFIDAVIT

……………………………………………………………………..do hereby solemnly affirm and declare that I shall

1. be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting
information;
2. test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to
avoid inadvertent\ error
3. not distort news deliberately.
4. diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the
opportunity to respond to respond to allegations of wrongdoing.
5. identify sources whenever possible.
6. always question the motives of the sources of news before promising
anonymity and clarify conditions attached to promises made in exchange for
information and shall not break the promise or promises made.
7. make certain that headlines, news-teases, promotional materials,
photographs, video clippings, audiographics, sound bytes and quotations do not
misrepresent and also see that these things do nor oversimplify or highlight
incidents out of context and out of proportion.
8. never distort the contents of news- photographs and/or video
recordings
9. avoid misleading re-enactments or staged news events.
10. avoid undercover or similar surreptitious means of gathering news except
when the usual and traditional open methods are unlawfully prevented or are not
likely to yield information\\ which shall be vital in public interest.
11. never plagiarize
12. never hesitate to tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the
human experience even when it is unpopular or risky and dangerous to do so.
13. avoid stereotyping by race, gender age, religion, ethnicity, geography,
sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, social, economic or
political status.
14. support free and frank exchange of ideas, even if views appear to be
repugnant.
15. rise to fearlessly give voice to the voiceless.
16. draw a clear line between advocacy and news reporting.
17. distinguish news from advertising and shunning hybrids that blur the lines
between the two.
18. neither over-maximize nor over-minimize harm
19. show compassion to those who are or who may be affected adversely by news
coverage
20. be extremely careful when dealing with the weaker sections of society,
especially children, illiterate ladies and oppressed members of the Backward
classes and the minorities.
21. remember that gathering, reporting and prescribing news is not a license
for arrogance.
22. be sensitive and humane when seeking and/or using interviews or
photographs of those affected by tragedy and\grief
23. avoid trespassing upon and intruding on anyone's privacy when hunting for
news
24. refrain from pandering to lurid curiosity
25. be extra cautious when identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex
crimes
26. be judicious when naming or identifying criminal suspects before charges
are framed and filed.
27. be good enough to balance a criminal suspect's fair and legitimate rights
with the rights of the public to be informed.
28. be brave enough to act independently, happen what may.
29. be free from obligation to any interest other than the right of the aam
aadmees to know what has actually happened or is likely to happen
30. avoid conflict of interests – be it REAL or PERCEIVED.
31. remain free from such activity or activities or organizations which
compromise or are likely to compromise INTEGRITY, and/or damage CREDIBILTY.
32. softly decline to receive costly gifts, special favours and "royal"
treatment and refuse secondary\ employment, if and when such favours and
treatments compromise journalistic integrity.
33. disclose unavoidable conflicts
34. be not only vigilant but also bold if and when holding those who have
enormous power – man, money, muscle and/or political.
35. deny favoured treatment to advertisers and V.I.Ps and also resist their
pressure to influence news coverage.
36. be wary of sources offering information for favours or for money.
37. encourage the public to voice grievances even if it be against the media
itself.
38. honestly admit mistakes and apologize for the same and correct them as
quickly as possible
39. never hesitate to expose unethical practices of fellow-journalists, news
media and also those owning and/or running the electronic or print media and
40. ABOVE ALL, BE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE READERS/VIEWERS/LISTENERS/MY OWN
CONSCIENCE AND REMEMBER EVERY MOMENT OF MY LIFE THAT ALLAH HAS APPOINTED
RECORDING ANGELS TO RECORD MY WORLDLY ACTIVITIES AND THAT I SHALL BE ANSWERABLE
TO ALLAH IN THE HEREAFTER FOR MY WORLDLY DEEDS.
