Ganesh Krupa Society, Jawahar Nagar, Santacruz East is just one among the 46 Societies slated for rehabilitation by the SRA, in a 140-acre slum called Golibar. It used to comprise 323 families, but at last count it stood at 172. The people are being driven off this land they first came to and settled 60 years back, land for which they have paid property tax, by Shivalik Ventures with the help of MHADA and local police.

The issue of rehabilitation is another one that troubles the residents. The builder rehabilitate 520 families, but in buildings constructed on land that belongs to the Air Force that has taken MHADA and Shivalik Ventures to court over this and a judgement is awaited.

Despite all the irregularities, instead of ordering an enquiry, the state sent its the bulldozers and on January 20th, 2011, the residents, alongside Medha Patkar stood before the demolition squad. They were pushed, beaten and forced into vans that took them to Nirmal Nagar Police Station. Even though the order to evacuate asked for residents to clear out their homes and hand over the keys to the authorities, the authorities took away people's belongings and pushed them into transit camp rooms. They then broke down 19 houses of the Society. They slapped and threatened and beat up the people inside these houses. Even old and crippled people.

That evening three thousand slum-dwellers arrived from all parts of Mumbai and took out a rally in support of Ganesh Krupa Society.

The residents of Ganesh Krupa Society, Golibar, Khar East, have recently filed a Writ Petition in the Mumbai High Court appealing for a stay against their forceful eviction by MHADA.

Here Medha Patkar talks about corruption and launching a nationwide campaign against such illegal evictions happening all over.
