A SPECIAL NOTE OF CONGRATULATIONS!

Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace):

As soon as I arrived at my hotel in Houston about 1/2 hour ago, as I was about to exit my car, a news flash came over the radio (CNN) followed by audio footage of delightful pandamonium: disgraced Egyptian [now former] President Hozni Mubarak announced his resignation, ending three decades of oppressive rule in Egypt. Alhamdullilah!!!

I am scheduled to deliver a khutbah (Friday jumu'ah sermon) in about two hours; that news provided me with an immediate jolt of mental and physical energy, after a looong trip. (It has also provided me with the inspiration for an even more impactful address, insha'Allah.

On a personal note, I feel deeply privileged at being alive and present for two great revolutions that emanated from the Muslim world; the 1979 Revolution in Iran, and the 2011 Revolution in Egypt. Both of these revolutions share much in common (I will have more to say on this later, insha'Allah).

Let me end by noting the fact that there are many important lessons stemming from what the world just witnessed in North Africa. One of those lessons revolves around a mantra that one often hears in human rights demonstrations in America:

A PEOPLE UNITED CAN NEVER BE DEFEATED!

Congratulations Egypt! Now comes the struggle to safeguard the fruits of a valiant peoples' noble sacrifice! May ALLAH fortify us all for the struggle ahead (both here and abroad). Ameen.

Mubarak Resigns, Hands Power to Military

Feb 11, 2011 – AP

Maggie Michael and Paul Schemm

CAIRO - Egypt's Hosni Mubarak resigned as president and handed control to the military on Friday, bowing down after a historic 18-day wave of pro-democracy demonstrations by hundreds of thousands. "The people ousted the president," chanted a crowd of tens of thousands outside his presidential palace in Cairo.

Several hundred thousand protesters massed in Cairo's central Tahrir Square exploded into joy, waving Egyptian flags, and car horns and celebratory shots in the air were heard around the city of 18 million in joy after Vice President Omar Suleiman made the announcement on national TV just after nightfall.

Mubarak had sought to cling to power, handing some of his authorities to Suleiman while keeping his title. But an explosion of protests Friday rejecting the move appeared to have pushed the military into forcing him out completely. Hundreds of thousands marched throughout the day in cities across the country as soldiers stood by, besieging his palace in Cairo and Alexandria and the state TV building.

"In these grave circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave his position as president of the republic," a grim-looking Suleiman said. "He has mandated the Armed Forces Supreme Council to run the state. God is our protector and succor."

Nobel Peace laureate Mohammed ElBaradei, whose young suporters were among the organizers of the protest movement, told The Associated Press, "This is the greatest day of my life."

"The country has been liberated after decades of repression," he said adding that he expects a "beautiful" transition of power.
