INSAF Press Release - Chhatisgarh Special Tasks Police Force Raid on Kavita Srivatava's House in Jaipur

3rd October 2011

                                                          PRESS RELEASE

INSAF condemns the illegal and terrorising raid by the Chhatisgarh Special Tasks Police Force esidence of prominent human rights activist and National Secretary of PUCL, Ms. Kavita Srivastava in Jaipur.

Ms. Kavita Srivastava has been targeted because of her support to the struggle for restoration of human rights in Chhattisgarh and the rest of India. She has through PUCL and other organizations worked against the arbitrary detentions in the State of Rajasthan in their bid for countering Maoism. Recently she was active in exposing the saffron agendas in the Bharatpur riots. This attack is clearly a means of intimidation and threatening which we condemn in strong words.

It is mere misuse of the state's machinery and does nothing but instills fear in people. Use of Task forces and especially when who they were looking for is completely anonymous or unknown to the members of the house that was attacked. Further certain explanations must be given about "abhiyukt", accused or the 'Khatarnak naxalite, who was believed to be in her residence. It amounts to nothing but careful use of such words to harass the activists.

It is a shame that racial biases should emerge in such condemning way against the workers of the house from Cooch Bihar and Bengal in a distinctive way.  We believe Jaipur Police must also provide a sufficient reason that why such raid by a truckload of Chhatisgarh Special Tasks Police Force was assisted in harassing her family and ailing father.

INSAF condemns this inhuman act and requests all organizations to come together and defeat the increasing violations by the police.

Chitranjan Singh

General Secretary
