Refugees that make it to Indonesia are often stranded. The official UNHCR process can take years to resettle people, and in the meantime they face the threat of imprisonment. Unable to work most struggle to survive. These conditions force people onto boats to Australia. Yet over recent years the Australian government has accepted only a tiny number of refugees for resettlement from Indonesia. This meeting will hear a first hand account about conditions for refugees in Indonesia from Taka Gani, who works with the Jesuit Refugee Service which assists asylum seekers in and out of detention.
