Eyewitness report on refugees in Indonesia next Monday 6pm

RAC is holding a special forum next Monday night, hope you can make it.

Stranded: Eyewitness report on refugees in Indonesia

Guest speaker: Taka Gani (national program officer for Jesuit Refugee Service in Indonesia, presently based in Bogor, pictured at left)
and Mark Goudkamp (RAC, who visited asylum seekers in Indonesia in 2011 and 2012).

6pm Monday March 18, NSW Teachers Federation Building, 23-33 Mary St, Surry Hills
Drinks and food from 6pm, forum starts 6.30pm

Refugees that make it to Indonesia are often stranded. The official UNHCR process can take years to resettle people, and in the meantime they face the threat of imprisonment. Unable to work most struggle to survive. These conditions force people onto boats to Australia. Yet over recent years the Australian government has accepted only a tiny number of refugees for resettlement from Indonesia. This meeting will hear a first hand account about conditions for refugees in Indonesia from Taka Gani, who works with the Jesuit Refugee Service which assists asylum seekers in and out of detention.
