Dear All,
As reported yesterday, 40 platoons of police were deployed near
Balitutha in Jagatsinghpur in Orissa where people are resisting
against POSCO project and are sitting on a protest demo since 26
January 2010. The police force is now marching towards the protest
site and the DM of the area is leading the march now (15 May 2010 -
10am IST). Some of us have called the SP Debadutta Singh who is at the
site now and he says that they will charge the people. When asked why
there is a force approaching people, his nonchalant answer was "these
people are not allowing the government to enter the area. We will use
force today to facilitate the entry of the government officials to the
area. I am here and will use the force."
There are around 700 local people sitting in the dharna at present and
their lives alongwith others in the area are in danger. This brutal
treatment by the state must be stopped and we all have to do whatever
we can to get the force leave the area immediately. Please use all
your contacts to help the anti-POSCO activists who have all along
shown tremendous strength in fighitng against the steel giant POSCO
and the state brutalities. This is an appeal to all human rights
organisation across the globe to respond to this situation urgently.

Modi hits back, files 10000-page reply to BCCI.. As Lalt Modi is all set to be bailed out as it had been the case with UN Return Shashi Tharoor.IPL Sexy show had a Great Role in Parliamntray Realty show as Economic reforms and Legislation had no Opposition on the Floor neither any Resistance was noted outside the Parliament. It had been an Excellent Rothschild act after all! Less than a month after he was suspended as the IPL Commissioner and served a chargesheet by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Lalit Modi is ready with his defence.
Modi responded to the first showcause notice served to him for alleged financial irregularities on Saturday with a staggering 10,000-page reply which was carried into the BCCI headquarters in six large cartons.
Modi, who had got an extension of five days from May 10 deadline, submitted his reply through his lawyers, who brought in the papers in four cars amidst the media frenzy at the Cricket Centre, the Board's headquarters.
BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty received the papers and documents on behalf of the Board.
Modi's lawyer Memmood S Abdi did not elaborate the content. But according to sources, Modi has refuted all the five charges levelled against him by the BCCI.
"These are quasi-judicial proceedings hence it is for the BCCI to share contents of our reply with the media," Modi's lawyer Abdi said. "We have given a clarification on all charges. The showcause should be dropped now. The allegations made by the BCCI are based on hearsay and Modi became fall guy."
"There is no scope for the BCCI to keep the charges alive. The BCCI didn't provide documents to many allegations that were made," Abdi further said.
Modi's legal team has also prepared a detailed dossier that is likely to focus on counter-charges against two members of the IPL Governing Council.
BCCI administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said the board will follow established procedure about Modi's reply. The voluminous reply will now put the ball in BCCI's court as they first have to scrutinise the papers and then decide the future course of action after consulting their own lawyers.
Modi was suspended on April 26, soon after the conclusion of the IPL-III final in Navi Mumbai by BCCI which sent him a show cause notice asking him to reply to a slew of charges relating to the conduct of the high-profile Twenty20 league.
Modi is accused of indulging in murky financial deals without the knowledge of the IPL Governing Council, bid-rigging and taking kickbacks from the TV rights and internet deals.
Modi's problems were compounded when he was slapped with a second show cause notice by the Board for allegedly trying to provoke English counties to revolt against their parent body, the ECB, and start a parallel Twenty20 league.
Now the board's three-man disciplinary committee, comprising President Shashank Manohar and two vice-presidents - Arun Jaitley and Chirayu Amin, will take a decision on the matter. The panel is expected to meet in mid-June to decide on the issue.

Entry point to proposed Posco plant Cleared of Agitators!At least eight people, including five policemen, were injured after villagers protesting a project by South Korean steel major Posco in Orissa`s Jagatsinghpur district clashed with police, an official said.
Maoist leader Kishenji on Saturday came out strongly against the IPL, allocation of land to POSCO and the Centre's decision on PSUs. He announced a 48-hour shutdown in five states from May 18 to protest against all these issues.
He vehemently called for the scrapping the Indian Premier League accusing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union ministers P Chidambaram, Praful Patel and Sharad Pawar of being involved in the 'scam' surrounding the popular Twenty20 cricket event.
"Maoists will observe bandh on May 18 and May 19 in the five states to protest against the Centre's decision to sell ten per cent government stake in 10 profit-making Public Sector Undertakings," Kishenji told PTI over phone from an undisclosed location.
The politburo member of CPI (Maoist) said they were against dilution of government stake in state-owned banks "to favour entry of international banks like Morgan Stanley, Citibank and Deutsche Bank".
Kishenji also said that the CPI (Maoist) was against handing over 15,000 acre to steel maker POSCO in Orissa and favoured subsidy to the oil companies to keep the rate of petroleum products stable.
Making a slew of other demands Kishenji said, "The government should immediately take action against these accused along with others who are behind the scam involving telecom spectrum allocation," Kishenji said.
Kishenji's bandh call and demands come a day after Maoists killed four CPI-M supporters and one party worker in the Naxal stronghold of Jungle Mahal areas in West Bengal.
The shutdown will affect Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

Gondwana (India)

Gondwana is a region of India. Named after the Gondi people who live there (though they can also be found in other parts of India), the name of the ancient continent of Gondwanaland was derived from Gondwana, because some of the earliest rock formations of this continent were first investigated in part of the region, in modern Orissa.
As Gonds are spread widely across central India, and are a minority almost everywhere, there is no unambiguous boundary to the region. However, the core region can be considered to be the eastern part of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, the parts of Madhya Pradesh immediately to the north of it, and parts of the west of Chhattisgarh. The wider region extends beyond these, also including parts of northern Andhra Pradesh, and western Orissa.
The region is part of the northern Deccan plateau, with an average height of about 600–700 metres. Much of it is rugged and hilly. Geologically it is mostly Pre-Cambrian rock, with some areas dated to Permian and Triassic periods. Part of it is overlaid with alluvium, and in the west it is overlaid with the igneous rocks of the Deccan Traps.
The climate is hot and semi-arid. The natural vegetation is dry monsoon forest, or monsoon scrub forest. Large parts of it are still forest, and it contains several national parks, including tiger populations.
Gondwana has a relatively high proportion of peoples of the "scheduled tribes" of India, which include the Gonds. The scheduled tribes are recognised as economically and socially disadvantaged. They form a majority of the population in many districts.

A number of old kingdoms were established by, or together with, ruling families of the Gonds and other scheduled tribes in this region. The first of these is mentioned in 1398, when Narsingh Rai, raja of Kherla, is said by Ferishta to have ruled all the hills of Gondwana. He was finally overthrown and killed by Hoshang Shah, king of Malwa. Between the 14th and the 18th centuries, three main Gond kingdoms existed; Garha-Mandla occupied the upper Narmada Valley, Deogarh-Nagpur occupied the Kanhan River and upper Wainganga River valleys, and Chanda-Sirpur occupied present-day Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and eastern Adilabad districts.
The three Gond principalities of Garha-Mandla, Deogarh, and Chanda-Sirpur were nominally subject to the Mughal emperors. In addition to the acquisitions made in the north at the expense of Garha-Mandla, the Mughals, after the annexation of Berar in 1595, established governors at Paunar in Wardha District and Kherla in Betul District. Having thus hemmed in the Gond states, however, they made no efforts to assert any effective sovereignty over them; the Gond rajas for their part were content with practical independence within their own dominions. Under their peaceful rule their territories flourished, until the weakening of the Mughal empire and the rise of the expanding Bundela and Maratha powers brought misfortune upon them.
In the 17th century Chhatar Sal, the Bundela chieftain, deprived the Mandla principality of part of the Vindhyan plateau and the Narmada Valley. In 1733 the Maratha Peshwa invaded Bundelkhand; and in 1735 the Marathas had established their power in Saugor. In 1742 the Peshwa advanced to Mandla and exacted tribute, and from this time until 1781, when Gond dynasty of Garha-Mandla was finally overthrown, Garha-Mandla remained practically a Maratha dependency. Meanwhile the other independent principalities of Gondwana had in turn succumbed. In 1743 Raghoji Bhonsle of Berar established himself at Nagpur, and by 1751 had conquered the territories of Deogarh, Chanda, and Chhattisgarh.
The economic disadvantage to which the tribal people are now subject is often ascribed to the Maratha conquest of the region in the 18th century, followed by the British imposition of the permanent settlement in the 19th century. A number of rebellions against British rule took place throughout the 19th century. Some of these rebellions focused on protection of forests against commercial logging. In their efforts to subjugate them, entire communities were labelled "criminal classes" by the British.

The police on Saturday cleared the entry point to the proposed Posco mega steel plant at Balitutha, of protesters resisting land acquisition since January 26, using rubber bullets, teargas and batons, leaving at least 30 people injured.
"The people on dharna at Balitutha defying prohibitory orders have been evicted," Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police Debadutta Singh said.
The police which ordered the 1000-odd protesters, mostly women and children, to leave immediately cracked down when 50 crude bombs were thrown at them, he said.
He did not reply to allegations that the temporary camps of protesters were set ablaze by the police.
Police used baton, teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the anti-Posco agitators, Inspector General of Police, Central Range, S K Upadhaya said.
Some people received minor injuries in the police action, he said, adding, 11 others were also arrested.
"Our next target is obviously Dhinkia village, epicentre of the anti-Posco agitation," Upadhaya said.
The police will remain in the area till officials surveyed the forest area and land was acquired for the proposed mega steel plant, he said.
"We have been successful in restoring law and order at Balitutha being held by anti-project activists since January 26," Jagastsinghpur district collector N C Jena told newsmen.
Earlier, local CPI MP Bibhu Prasad Tarai, Congress leader Umesh Swain and Jayant Biswal were arrested as a preventive measure, though former CPI MLA Narayan Reddy joined the agitators at Balitutha.
The administration had deployed 1500 security personnel, six magistrates, four ambulances and two fire tenders at Balitutha prior to the operation, police added.
Police baton charged and fired rubber bullets on hundreds of protesters after they refused to vacate a road at Balitutha, the entry point to the proposed site that is blocked since Jan 26 to prevent the entry of government and company officials into the area.
The district authorities earlier termed the blockade illegal and clamped section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the area prohibiting the assembly of five or more people.
"Police had to initiate action after the protesters hurled about 100 low intensity bombs and pelted stones," district Superintendent of Police Suresh Singh Dev Dutta Singh told IANS.
"At least five policemen were injured," he said, adding that at least three protesters sustained minor injuries.
However, Posco Pratirodha Sangram Samiti (PPSS) - which has been spearheading the stir - denied the police's claims of resorting to violence and said the number of injured was at least 15.
"It was a peaceful protest. Police fired rubber bullets in which at least 15 of our people have sustained injuries," the group's spokesman Prasant Paikray told IANS.
"The allegations that protesters hurled bombs and pelted stones are totally baseless," he said.
Earlier, police had arrested the local MP, Bibhu Prasad Tarai, as he was headed to meet the protesters.
"We arrested him for apprehension of breach of peace," the district police chief said.
Posco, one of the world?s biggest steel makers, signed a deal with the Orissa government in June 2005 to set up the project near the port town of Paradip in Jagatsinghpur, some 100 km from here, by 2016.
The steel maker requires about 4,004 acres for the project, of which 2,900 acres is forest land. The project has been delayed for over three years due to various reasons, including protests by local residents.
Thousands of villagers have been protesting the project, saying it will displace them from their homeland and ruin their betel-leaf farms. Posco and the government maintain the project will bring prosperity and employment to an impoverished region.
There has been no progress on the ground despite the state receiving final clearance from the central forest and environment ministry for acquiring forest land for the project.

POSCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Orissa in June 2005, to set up a 12 MTPA green field steel plant near Paradip, Jagatsinghpur District, Orissa, with an estimated investment of USD 12 billion. The company will build a 4 million-ton per annum capacity steel plant in Orissa, during the first phase of its project by 2011~12, and expand the final production volume to 12 million tons per annum. Bhubaneshwar: South Korean steelmaker POSCO will start construction early next year of a billion project in India that has been delayed by farmers' protests, the company president said.
The plant in Orissa, touted as India's biggest foreign direct investment, has been delayed by more than two years due to protests by farmers who fear losing their livelihood.
The company, which had hoped to begin construction in April last year, now expects to complete land acquisition by the end of 2009, clearing the way to start construction next year.
"We almost solved problems already. We will start our construction very soon ... from early next year we will start our land levelling work," Lee Dong-hee, POSCO's president and chiefinvestment officer, told reporters late on Wednesday.
He dismissed media reports that the company planned to relocate the project from the planned site near the Paradip port.
"We have never changed our plan," Lee said, after meeting the state chief minister Naveen Patnaik and senior government officials at the capital city Bhubaneswar.
POSCO had signed a memorandum of understanding with Orissa in June 2005 for the 12-million-tonne-capacity steel plant to be built in three phases by 2016, with production scheduled to begin by the end of 2011 at the completion of the first phase.
With the grant of the mining lease delayed due to litigation, Lee said the company would start construction of the steel plant first. The company requires 20 mn tonnes of iron ore per year over 30 years for steel production at full capacity.
The world's No. 4 steel maker requires about 4,000 acres (1,620 hectares) of land, of which a large part is forested. Activists have said the construction will force villagers off farmland and displace about 20,000 people.
POSCO and the state have said the plant, in the Jagatsinghpur district of the mineral-rich state, will create jobs in an impoverished part of the country, but villagers had refused to hand over land and staged frequent protests.
The Supreme Court top court last August allowed the company use of tracts of forest land, but the protests have continued, reflecting a larger standoff between industry and farmers unwilling to give up land.
"We will not give any land. Our fight against the project will continue," said Prashant Paikray, a protest leader.
Other projects, including Tata Motors' plant for the cheap Nano car, have been delayed or relocated due to similar protests in India, where two-thirds of the population depends on agriculture for a living.

New Delhi, May 13: A team led by steel secretary Atul Chaturvedi and SAIL chairman S. K. Roongta is in Korea to give the final touches to a deal that will see the state-run steel firm giving out prized land at its Bokaro steel plant to Posco. Korea's Posco and SAIL have proposed to make 1.5 million tonnes of specialised steel by setting up a joint venture, in which the Korean firm may hold majority control. Sources said SAIL might also help the joint venture in securing mining linkages. The Indian government, keen to see the deal materialise in the interests of Indo-Korean ties, has been facilitating the negotiations. However, Posco is not the only company looking for an alliance with the state-run company. SAIL is one of the few steel makers in the country with spare land in its townships and strong mining linkages. The Tatas are in talks with SAIL to set up a 2-million-tonne steel making unit using an existing 50:50 mining joint venture formed a few years back. The proposed unit will also use SAIL land at Bokaro. "Talks are still on between the two sides ... but there has been a lot of progress," said officials. ArcelorMittal, which had eyed part of SAIL's Chiria mines, is also in talks for an alliance. The Jharkhand government had tried to take back part of Chiria from SAIL to give away to private steel firms such as ArcelorMittal, but an appelate tribunal disallowed this. A protracted court case followed. The Mittals, whose plans for large mills in Orissa and Jharkhand have not made much headway, now want to set up a 3-4mt plant in a joint venture with SAIL in eastern India. The world's No. 1 steel maker wants SAIL to provide land as well mining linkages. However, SAIL insiders say the company does not have an inexhaustible supply of land. "We are going through a Rs 70,000-crore expansion programme. Giving away our land to these joint ventures means our expansion programme will face scarcity of land." Moreover, giving away mining linkages will affect SAIL, which could face a huge shortfall of 2.3 billion tonnes of iron ore in the future. "Only the Korean project talks of using fines ... the others don't ... ore may have to be supplied to these joint ventures. Meanwhile,Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi has spoken out in a mounting debate over a deadly Maoist revolt, saying poverty was at the root of the insurgency.

The Maoists' growing strength highlights the need for development efforts to reach the "most backward districts," Gandhi said in the latest issue of the Congress party journal "Congress Sandesh," which appeared at the weekend.
Gandhi is president of the left-leaning Congress and regarded as the power behind the government.
Analysts see her intervention as a sign the leadership is uneasy with the government's "action-first" approach, in an increasingly heated party debate on ending the unrest that has spread to 20 of India's 29 states.
The rise of the Maoists reflects the need "for our development initiatives to reach the grassroots," said Gandhi, who has aggressively championed the left-leaning party's pro-poor programmes.
Maoist influence is greatest in impoverished, remote areas, fuelling the arguments that growing social disparities thrown up by India's blistering economic growth has been a major factor behind the rebels' expansion.
Late last year, the Congress-led coalition government launched a large-scale offensive involving six states worst hit by Maoist violence.
But the rebels' superior knowledge of local terrain has thwarted efforts to take to take them on in large numbers.
In April, the insurgents massacred 75 policemen in a jungle ambush in central India, the deadliest attack by the Maoists in a single day.
The rebels insist they are fighting for the rights of the poor in India's hinterland.
Gandhi has been seeking to strengthen the party's pro-poor credentials in time for crucial state elections that may attract Maoist sympathisers or supporters.

"Because one of the things, obviously, that we have to recognise is, that no matter what we do, oil prices are going to be going up over the long term," he said. "You're not always clear what's going on, but the long-term trend is just because countries like China — they're starting to buy cars and countries like India are starting to buy cars, and so the demand on petroleum and fossil fuels are going to be greater and greater — we've got to get a first-class transit system," Obama said. | ||

President signs ordinance to dissolve MCI!
President Pratibha Patil on Saturday gave her assent to an ordinance dissolving scam-tainted Medical Council of India (MCI) and replace it with a seven-member panel of eminent doctors.The panel will be in charge till the next one year, Health Secretary Sujatha Rao said.
The President signed the ordinance dissolving the MCI General Council, official sources in the Rashtrapati Bhavan said. The ordinance has also been notified by the Union Law Ministry.
The Government has said it would bring in a new law for the formation of an overarching body to regulate medical education in the country.
Rao has yesterday said a draft law for the formation of such a body would be formulated within a month. She added that the draft law would be a legislative response to the credibility crisis which the MCI was in.
MCI president Ketan Desai was arrested on April 22 by CBI for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs two crore to give permission to a Punjab medical college to recruit a fresh batch of students without having requisite infrastructure.
The MCI was established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, now repealed, with the main function of establishing uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and recognition of medical qualifications in India and abroad.
In 1956, the old Act was repealed and a new one was enacted. This was further modified in 1964, 1993 and 2001.
The objectives of the Council include maintenance of uniform standards of medical education, both undergraduate and postgraduate and recommendation for recognition or de-recognition of medical qualifications of medical institutions of India or foreign countries.

On Saturday, soldiers unrolled razor wire across roads leading to the Ratchaprarop area - a commercial district north of the main protest site - and pinned Thai and English-language notices saying "Live Firing Zone" and "Restricted Area. No Entry."
Ratchaprarop houses high-rise buildings, posh hotels and designer shops. It was the scene of some of the worst fighting yesterday between troops and anti-government protesters.

The latest violence erupted Thursday after the Red Shirts' military strategist, a former army general, was shot in the head and critically wounded, apparently by a sharpshooter, as he spoke to foreign journalists.
"The situation right now is getting closer to civil war every minute," a protest leader, Jatuporn Prompan, said. "We have to fight on. The leaders shouldn't even think about retreat when our brothers are ready to fight on."
In a message from New York, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed to both sides to "do all within their power to avoid further violence and loss of life."
The Red Shirts, mostly rural poor, began camping in the capital March 12 to try to force out Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. About 10,000 have barricaded themselves in a protest zone in Rajprasong, Bangkok's premier shopping and diplomatic enclave.
They have set up a perimeter of tires and bamboo stakes, refusing to leave until Abhisit dissolves Parliament and calls new elections.
They claim his coalition government came to power through manipulation of the courts and the backing of the powerful military, and that it is indifferent to the poor.
In several rounds of violence since then, a total 46 people have been killed and at least 1,620 wounded, according to a government toll that includes the most recent clashes.
"I am gravely concerned that a bloody suppression will only further entrench the culture of ... violence in Thailand," Tyrell Haberkorn, a political scientist with The Australian National University, said by e-mail.
She said the protests stem from the outrage the marginalised majority feel at the lack of say they have in governance, which is largely in the hands of the elites.
PC disappointed over BJP's statement on Muivah
Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said he was surprised and disappointed by BJP's statement alleging that his unilateral decision to allow NSCN-IM leader T Muivah to visit Manipur had created tension there.The minister said he had met a BJP delegation led by Prakash Javadekar yesterday in connection with the situation in Manipur.
"After hearing the delegation, I explained in detail the developments in the past week. The delegation thanked me for the patient hearing, for the briefing on the developments in Manipur and urged me and the government to continue to deal with the situation with tact and understanding.
"The delegation expressed satisfaction at the conclusion of the meeting. I am, therefore, surprised and disappointed by the statement issued by Prakash Javadekar yesterday," Chidambaram said in a statement.
Attacking Chidambaram, Javadekar had yesterday said, "The unilateralism of the Home Minister has once again created tension. Earlier, he had announced creation of a separate Telangana state without taking the Andhra Pradesh Government into confidence. This time, he allowed Muivah to visit his village in Manipur without asking the state government for its view."
Later, after emerging from his meeting with Chidambaram, the BJP spokesperson said the Minister had "assured us" of appropriate actions on the Manipur issue.
On Muivah's visit, Chidambaram today said the NSCN(IM) leader had "expressed a desire to visit his native village, Somdal, in Ukhrul district, Manipur. He submitted an itinerary through the Interlocutor R S Pandey.
"Muivah was told that his visit can be facilitated in consultation with the Government of Manipur.
"The Government of Manipur took the stand that such a visit would not be appropriate at this time. Efforts were made over several days to find a solution. The Chief Minister of Manipur was requested to go over to Delhi and he did so on May 6, 2010," the Home Minister said.
Chidambaram said the Finance Minister, the Defence Minister and the Home Minister held talks with the Chief Minister of Manipur. "However, after his return to Imphal, the Chief Minister reiterated the stand of his government that the visit of Muivah to Somdal could not be allowed at this stage."
IPL parties: the inside story
Hindustan TimesDhoni was right in one way. Players have to make their own choices about their bodies, but it's not always that easy — not if you're not Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Sachin Tendulkar or Rahul Dravid.
My problem with the IPL Nites parties was not that I was forced to attend by any contractual obligation. There was no such thing for me, or, to my knowledge, for any of my fellow India players.
Each party was invariably the same routine. You would have a set-up with a ramp show that lasted 30 to 45 minutes, then the models would come off and mix with the rest and the party would take off.
There were cheerleaders and girls who we called 'escort service'. Beautiful women to add glamour to the mix, get the party moving. They were not allowed to talk to any player for more than five minutes. If they did, a manager would walk up and slickly move her away.
But there were other women, willing and uninhibited. The big-name players who did attend generally handled themselves without a problem. They would hang around, chat, have a drink, pick up a happy girl, sometimes two, take her back to the hotel room and have some fun.
Watching some of our younger players, the u-19 and u-22 kids, though, was scary. They had never been exposed to Bollywood stars, Page 3 personalities, endless cigarettes (all free), flowing booze, occasionally drugs and always women, willing women, everywhere. The boys lapped it up, and would party right through. Those that didn't drink or smoke did so to be part of the cool gang.
The pressure lay more in the occasional hint dropped by an IPL official, a sponsor or a franchise official that it would be good if I were there for a bit, that there were some people they would like me to meet. I am not Tendulkar or Dravid, I couldn't say no, go back to my room and stay there and not be bothered.
So when you go back to the room to recover, you really don't want to hang around there when the rest of the guys are going downstairs — the parties are always in the team hotels — and you don't want to be called "boring".
So you tell yourself, 'I'll go down for an hour', only, it's never an hour. Before you know it, it's 4am and you're heading back to your room, hurrying to pack up and head to another city, another game, another sponsor's commitment (which are endless), another shoot possibly and yes, another party.
The problem is that you can never switch off mentally. Not on the field, not during the hours spent in airports when fans and the airport staff want an autograph, photograph or just a chat and not in the parties, where you'll be introduced to important people who will listen to you and perhaps, be important contacts who will make money for you.
It's a choice and it's tiring but it's also business. You have to be switched on.
It takes a toll, when you play a game, party till 4am, pack and grab an hour's sleep before heading for the airport and spend six to 12 hours travelling. Places like Jaipur and Chandigarh don't have direct connections to everywhere else. That's my most vivid memory of IPL, not the matches, not the parties but the endless travel and exhaustion — and next year, with 34 games more, it will only get worse. I didn't even know if I really wanted to. It's like this.
The IPL is intense; short bursts of highly charged games and then, nothing. There's no period of introspection.

People in these 6 villages in 3 grampanchayats inside the proposed project area have dug their heels in since last 4 years refusing to negotiate with the State government or Posco.
As the Jagatsinghpur district administration aided by 25 platoons of armed police moved to clear the road this morning a clash ensued among the police and the villagers. According to the leaders of the Posco Pratiodh Sangram Samiti, police first fired teargas shells and set on fire the tent under which the protestors were sitting on dharna and then chased the people away from the dharna site at Balitutha. "More than 100 villagers were injured. Even the police resorted to blank firing . Ours is a democratic mass resistance. It would go on," said Prasahant Paikray, spokesperson of PPSS.
However, police claimed the villagers first hurled about 100 crude bombs at them. "We then retaliated by lobbing teargas shells and firing rubber bullets. Five of our men have been injured," Jagatsinghpur SP Devdutt Singh told The Indian Express. "We wanted to clear the road as it was inconveniencing other people in the area. In a democracy everyone have the right to protest. But obstructing the road is inhuman. We have been successful in clearing off the road," he said.
Since morning, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC as part of Orissa government's efforts to begin forest survey and land acquisition at the plant site.
Early this morning, the police arrested CPI MP from Jagatsinghpur Bibhu Prasad Tarai was when he was trying to enter the proposed steel plant site of Posco ahead of a rally to protest the project. CPI has planned a rally to be addressed by senior party leader A B Bardhan on May 19.
Police said the MP was was arrested as a preventive measure to avoid any law and order problem. Similarly, Congress leaders Umesh Swain and Jayanta Biswal were also arrested. Tterming his arrest as "undemocratic", Tarai said he was proceeding to learn about people's problem area which falls under his constituency, Jagatsinghpur.
PPSS leaders said the activists had drawn a "laxman rekha (boundary)" at Balitutha to prevent police and government officials from entering into the area as the locals were against setting up of any industry which would displace them and snatch away their source of livelihood.
Ever since the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the company and the state in June 2005, the project has seen intense opposition from villagers of three panchayats—Dinkia, Nuagaon, and Gadkujang—who stand to loose their livelihood, land and homesteads if the project goes through.
Meanwhile, CPI has called a bandh in the area protesting the arrest of its MP.

New Delhi, May 14: Sonia Gandhi has said "the root causes of Naxalism" should be addressed along with decisive and forceful responses to "acts of terror", articulating the need for a holistic approach at a time the Congress is debating the sagacity of the "action-first" line associated with home minister P. Chidambaram. "Our country is facing an enormous challenge from the Naxalites. While we must address acts of terror decisively and forcefully, we have to address the root causes of Naxalism. The rise of Naxalism is a reflection of the need for our development initiatives to reach the grassroots, especially in our most backward tribal districts," the Congress president said in a letter to party workers in the latest issue of its organ, the Sandesh. The critics of the line tied to Chidambaram lapped up her letter, claiming they were asking for such an articulation in place of "the wipe-them-out" rhetoric. The reference to the "root causes" does reflect an opinion within the Congress that favours a nuanced approach. However, by using phrases such as "acts of terror" and words like "decisively" and "forcefully", Sonia has sought to ensure that her opinion is not construed as a show of no-confidence in Chidambaram's approach which has the full backing of influential voices in the government. The "wipe-them-out" line was taken by the party itself; the official spokesperson made that demand in the wake of the Dantewada massacre in which 75 CRPF jawans were killed. Although the tough posturing was hailed by the BJP and the CPM, dissenting voices emerged from within the Congress. The debate mirrors the differences between what came to be known as the "wets and dries" when Margaret Thatcher was in power in Britain. If the Iron Lady had to contend with "wets" — those in her Tory government who opposed her line and supported policies like increased public spending — the Congress has its own share of "liberals". Leaders like Digvijay Singh, Ajit Jogi, K. Keshava Rao and Mani Shankar Aiyar have openly expressed their concerns on the stress on police action. While Digvijay talked of Chidambaram's "rigidity" and "intellectual arrogance", Keshava Rao said the problem was of "perception" as the battle could not be fought without winning over the tribal population. Two schools of thought exist on what prompted these lieutenants to speak out. One believes that they would not have spoken out without the tacit approval of the party leadership that may have wanted to test the waters. The other feels that these leaders were trying to curry favour with the leadership, hoping to appeal to Sonia's well-known inclination for inclusiveness. Sonia has now somewhat revealed her mind; she has supported tough action but sought to alter the discourse to send out a message that the government is responsive, not hostile. This is the fine distinction, some Congress leaders said, the home ministry could not project even as the security establishment agreed on the need for development. Sonia had wholeheartedly supported Chidambaram when he was giving his reply in the Lok Sabha, indicating that she did not intend to weaken the government's resolve. The slightly different tenor and content of her communication with the party workers cannot be taken as a condemnation of the government's administrative actions. Sources admitted there were misgivings about the home ministry's packaging of the approach but said there was no fundamental difference or contradiction between the party and the government. Chidambaram, too, had said that the government had not lost sight of the socio-economic aspect but asserted that development was not possible without clearing the areas held by the Naxalites. Replying to the debate in Parliament, he had said: "Don't think the adversary will let you do development. They target infrastructure, they target schools and communication towers." |

Leaders of rival Palestinian factions displayed rare unity on Saturday as they marked their "day of catastrophe" or nakba at a rally in Gaza, raising hopes of reconciliation between the two bitter rival parties.
It was the first time leaders from Islamist Hamas and the more secular Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had shared the platform at a large public gathering since Hamas seized the Gaza Strip from Fatah in a 2007 civil war.
Palestinians mark "nakba day" on May 15, the day in 1948 when Israel declared statehood after which some 700,000 Arabs fled or were expelled in the war that ensued.
The rally, which was organized by the much smaller Islamic Jihad group to commemorate the nakba's 62nd anniversary, coincided with reports of serious talks between Hamas and Fatah to find ways to resolve their differences.
Top Palestinian businessman Munib al-Masri who has been heavily involved in recent mediation efforts, expressed cautious optimism, telling Reuters that "the coming days may result in a positive outcome but we should not expect too much."
Masri has been mediating between the two groups' leaders in the Palestinian territories and in exile and has enlisted the support of Arab diplomats to help narrow the differences. Over two years of Egyptian mediation efforts have so far failed.
Masri's efforts have led to a phone discussion between senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar and Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmed that has been well publicized among Palestinians.
Zahar told Reuters that if discussions with Fatah were successful the two sides would bring a joint proposal to Egyptian officials who are leading talks, saying that "reconciliation has become an urgent necessity."
Fatah official Zakaria al-Agha said the unity shown at the rally was "the start of a process to achieve reconciliation."
Hamas, which calls for the Jewish state's destruction and refuses to recognize agreements Fatah signed with Israel, has been locked in a power struggle with formerly dominant Fatah faction since it won a 2006 Palestinian election.
Iranian-backed Hamas scorns Abbas for his recognition of Israel and his declared readiness to renounce armed struggle.
Palestinian residents in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank have said the enmity between Hamas and Fatah following the 2007 Gaza standoff has wrecked the social fabric of Palestinian society and has undermined peacemaking with Israel.
The two groups continue to carry out arrests of activists affiliated with their rivals in Gaza where Hamas rules, and in the West Bank where Fatah holds sway.
Gaza has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt for three years and Hamas is blacklisted in the West as a terrorist group and has no normal access to funds as a recognized government.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Bitter Palestinian rivals marched together Saturday in a rare show of unity as they marked 62 years of displacement in the war surrounding Israel's creation.
The commemorations mark the uprooting of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who fled or were driven out of their homes during the 1948 Israeli-Arab war.
Loyalists of rival groups Hamas and Fatah held Palestinian flags and a giant key symbolic of their hoped-for return as part of the annual commemorations of what they call the "catastrophe," or "nakba" in Arabic. The names of the villages and towns emptied out during the war were written across the key, alongside the slogan "We will return."
Gaza's Hamas rulers invited their Fatah rivals to participate in the march, a rare gesture from the militant group since it seized Gaza and ousted Fatah forces in June 2007. In previous years, different Palestinian factions organized their own events, highlighting their inability to work together on key issues.
No political speeches were made — an apparent nod to the fundamental ideological differences between Hamas and Fatah.
Marchers also were asked not to raise the flags of their parties. Some Fatah women got around the ban by wearing yellow headscarves, the color of their movement.
Some 4.7 million Palestinians refugees and their descendants are scattered across the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, according to U.N. figures. About one-third still live in U.N.-supported refugee camps.
The plight of the refugees is one of the most emotionally charged issues for Palestinians and Israel to resolve. Palestinian negotiators have demanded at least partial repatriation. Israel has refused, saying an influx of refugees would dilute Israel's Jewish majority and threaten the existence of the state.
At the Gaza rally, marcher Amina Hasanat, 50, held up tattered documents she said showed her family owned a house and land in what is now the southern city of Beersheba in Israel. "They (the Jews) can go back to where they came from, and we will return to our homes and lands," Hasanat said.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds of Palestinian motorists and pedestrians halted as a one-minute siren wailed to mark the anniversary. Smaller marches took place in other West Bank towns and in east Jerusalem.
Also Saturday, the body of a 78-year-old Palestinian man was found shot dead next to the border with Israel, said Dr. Adham Abu Salmiyeh of the northern Gaza hospital Kamal Adwan.
An Israeli military spokesman said forces confirmed shooting a man who approached the border fence on Friday evening.
Israel has declared a swath of land on the Gaza side of the border as a no-go zone, and those approaching it risk getting shot by Israeli patrols. Israel says it's a security measure, to prevent infiltration and attacks by Gaza militants.

Alonso to start Monaco GP from last after crash
Monaco Fernando Alonso will start the Monaco Grand Prix from last place because the Spaniard's Ferrari can't be repaired from its crash in practice in time for qualifying.Alonso slid into the barrier after 21 minutes of Saturday's final free practice session, damaging the front suspension and breaking off his front right tire.

Bangladesh lifts ban on Indian yarn
Dhaka In a bid to help bring down the price of the textile raw material, Bangladesh has removed a ban on import of Indian yarn.The National Board of Revenue issued a notification late yesterday withdrawing the ban on import of Indian yarn through Benapole land port, said officials, adding four counts of yarn could be imported through the port.
"Yarn import has been opened for all through the land port," Textile and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique said. Earlier, the bonded warehouses alone were allowed to import yarn.
The decision to lift the ban was taken despite objections from the country's spinning mill owners, who were opposing the import of Indian yarn fearing that they would fail to sell their products in the local market.
Workers of over 1.3 million handloom and power loom units across Bangladesh, who were on an indefinite strike demanding duty-free import of Indian yran though the land port, today returned to work.
According Bangladesh Handloom and Power-loom Owners' Association, about 0.6 million looms forced closure and the remaining 1.4 million looms failed to use their production capacity due to the high price of yarn.
At present, at least 200 spinning mills in the country supply yarn to the local weavers and employ nearly 200,000 people directly and one million indirectly.

Mumbai Indian team manager at the Twenty20 World Cup, Ranjib Biswal, on Saturday submitted his report on the side's disastrous campaign in the West Indies to the BCCI highlighting fitness and disciplinary issues.Biswal said he has made some recommendations to the Board in his report on the trip, which ended in humiliation for inaugural champions India when they were knocked out of the showpiece event after failing to win even a single Super Eights stage match.
"I have submitted the report to the BCCI about the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. The BCCI is looking at the report and they will get back to you," Biswal told reporters after spending close to one and a half hour and the BCCI headquarters today.
"There are certain issues which I have recommended to the BCCI and I hope the Board knows how to react to that and I hope, the Board reacts to that," he added.
A source said the issues which Biswal is referring to are fitness, discipline and susceptibility to short-pitched bowling, which was thoroughly exposed on the bouncy Caribbean tracks.
"Biswal's report deals with all the issues that happened in the West Indies. The report has suggestions about the need to play more on bouncy wickets, issues relating to discipline and fitness of the players are also there," the source said.
Biswal once again denied media reports of Indian players being involved in a bar brawl in the West Indies after crashing out of the World Cup.
"That incident never took place. It was just a verbal talk and there is nothing substantial to that. There was an argument because the boys, who went there (to the pub) for dinner, were harassed by some Indian fans. There is nothing much about it," he said.
Sources said coach Gary Kirsten, who is reportedly unhappy with the players' fitness and commitment, will also submit a separate report to the BCCI.
Avoid unnecessary use of English: Ex-RSS chief
Ludhiana Former RSS chief K Sudershan on Saturday asked people to avoid "unnecessary" use of English, an essence of the British rule, which is relegating the national language Hindi."While the British rule was pushed out of the country with the great sacrifices by martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, the essence of the British rule (English language) is yet to go away," Sudershan said paying tributes to martyr Sukhdev on his 103rd birth anniversary at his residence here.
"The greatest tribute to the martyrs would be to adoptthe Indian culture and our own language which is being relegated to secondary position in preference to English," the former chief of the right wing group said.
Sudershan also expressed concern over rising drug abuse in Punjab and called for involvement of youth in constructive purposes to prevent them from falling prey to this menace.

Shilda, May 14: Maoists in battle fatigues posed as a security patrol to gain CPM supporters' trust in a West Midnapore village last night, led four men out and shot them dead in a tactic that could make sitting ducks of unwary populations anywhere. This morning, Chandabila residents found the four bloodstained bodies, hands tied behind their backs, laid out a short distance from one another across the middle of a road 10km from the village. The posters left beside them declared that these "police informers" had been "punished by a people's court". The killings raised fears that the ploy could be replicated elsewhere, especially since battle fatigues — the camouflage gear worn by security forces, especially during jungle warfare — are easily available and may allow wearers to carry weapons without being challenged. The police had no answers, with West Midnapore superintendent of police Manoj Verma merely confirming that there is no law against people wearing battle fatigues and Jhargram SP Praveen Tripathi stating the obvious: "The Maoists killed these men just to create panic." His boss, Bengal director-general of police Bhupinder Singh, made a less obvious claim: the Maoists were on a killing spree because they were "cornered". CPM worker Nazrul Mir, 42, and party supporters Ashok Ahir, 36, his brother Sanatan, 38, and Swapan Ahir were all shot through the head. Nazrul was a small-time cattle trader and the other victims were day labourers in a village of mostly poor people living in mud-walled houses with thatched or tiled roofs. Chandabila, about 7km from Shilda town where Maoists had massacred 24 Eastern Frontier Rifles jawans in February, is a CPM pocket on the turf of the rebel-backed People's Committee Against Police Atrocities, and looked on security force patrols as its friends. Gopinath Singh, 45, a labourer, said the villagers were woken up around 11.30 by the sound of heavy footfall on dry earth followed by loud knocks on the doors of some homes. He saw 30 to 35 people in camouflage outfits, many carrying rifles. "As they wore uniforms that we are used to seeing every day, we did not suspect them," Singh said. Nor did Ashok or Sanatan, said their mother Khadubala, 75. Nor did Nazrul. "My husband opened the door to find people wearing dresses used by the police and CRPF who regularly patrol the area," said Nazrul's wife Basera Bibi, 35. "They said they had come from (the local) Binpur police station and asked him to accompany them. My husband followed them but I became scared and asked, 'Where are you taking him?' They said, 'Don't worry, your husband would be back tomorrow morning'." A relative of Basera was among the first to see the bodies around 7.30am today, on the Shilda-Bankura Road that cuts through Etela forest. "This is the handiwork of Maoists. We believe there were about 20 guerrillas accompanied by residents of neighbouring villages who identified the homes of the victims. We are searching for them," SP Tripathi said. The Maoists today held a West Midnapore bandh to protest the alleged arrest of squad member Soma Mandi and press for her production in court. DGP Singh said: "Their bandh has seen no response. They are under pressure to make their presence felt. They are feeling cornered and so they are killing innocent people." A fifth man, a 62-year-old CPM branch committee member in Purulia's Arsa, fell to suspected Maoists' bullets last night. A group of 30 dragged farmer Sukanta Mahato out of his home in Pathardih village, tied his hands and feet and shot him twice about 300 metres from his house, sources said. New Delhi, May 14: The P. Chidambaram-led home ministry has suffered a series of reverses in the past fortnight. The Gorkhaland talks have floundered and the stand-off between Nagaland and Manipur over Naga leader Thuingaleng Muivah's proposed visit to his ancestral village in Manipur continues. The list of failures would become longer if one includes last Saturday's Naxalite attack in Chhattisgarh that left eight jawans dead. But more than the ministry's inadequacies on the Naxalite front, its inability to resolve political crises has come into focus. The most glaring is the situation on the Nagaland-Manipur border — something of the ministry's own making. "Law and order and maintenance of public order are state subjects. The Centre cannot steamroller state governments into accepting its diktats," said a senior ministry official. But it is a weak defence. The Centre's interlocutor for the Naga talks, R.S. Pandey, and senior ministry officials had acceded to Muivah's wish to visit his village and promised to facilitate the travel. But they got a rude shock when Manipur chief minister Ibobi Singh refused to play ball, even as Muivah camped on the border. Ibobi did not relent despite intervention from Chidambaram. It was surprising the ministry failed to anticipate the opposition. In the ensuing violence between Manipur police and Muivah's supporters, two persons died and many were injured. Even now, Muivah's supporters continue an economic blockade of Manipur, creating a scarcity of essential commodities in the state. Union home secretary G.K. Pillai's visit to the two states on Tuesday and Wednesday failed to resolve the impasse. At a meeting of the Congress core committee today, the majority of members felt that the home ministry had mishandled the crisis, sources said. Some leaders said the ministry had miscalculated in giving its assent to Muivah's plan to visit his ancestral village without consulting the Manipur government.
Others said the ministry should have calculated the risks instead of sending Pillai to the two states for damage control. The BJP, which had supported Chidambaram when he had offered to resign after the Dantewada massacre, said the minister's "unilateralism" was evident during the Nagaland-Manipur crisis. The episode has negated the gains of the peace talks between the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), which Muivah leads, and painted Delhi as "double-crossers" in the Nagas' eyes. Even the Gorkhas have started criticising the Centre after the collapse of the May 11 official-level talks in New Delhi. Earlier, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders had met Chidambaram on April 9 and his junior minister Ajay Maken a day later. They had implored the ministers to speak to the Bengal government and negotiate their territorial claims for the interim authority — inclusion of the Dooars, Terai and Siliguri areas under it. But the ministry advised them to strive for a political consensus with the Trinamul Congress and the CPM on their demand. The Bengal government and the state's parties want to discuss the issue of territory only after next year's Assembly polls. The Morcha said it would pull out of talks for the interim set-up and revive the demand for a Gorkhaland. |
ALKING TOO MUCH - Indian politicians cannot help courting instant popularity | |

Jairam Ramesh's little boast about Indians being better at English than the Chinese recalls the old tale of the Indian delegate who leant over to his Chinese neighbour at a diplomatic dinner and said patronizingly, "Likee soupee?" The Chinese smiled without replying. After a while the Indian was startled to find the Chinese on his feet delivering a brilliantly witty after-dinner speech in flawless Oxford English. Sitting down amidst resounding applause, the Chinese smiled kindly at the Indian and asked, "Likee speechee?" With global economic activity shifting to Asia, Sino-Indian relations in this 60th year of diplomatic ties "warrant initiatives in public policies", quoting Y.V. Reddy. The relationship is as important as India's ties with Pakistan or the United States of America and cannot be reduced to banality. Ramesh's betters in his party regularly reiterate that the world is big enough for India and China to grow together, but that cannot happen if the Chinese conclude that Indian foreign policy is up for grabs by smart-alecky operators afflicted with severe foot-and-mouth disease. Of course, Palaniappan Chidambaram and his ministry can be criticized. But it's for S.M. Krishna to take up the usurpation of his functions with the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi, not for a minister of state for the environment who may be angling for South Block to make snide remarks. Nor is the foreign correspondents' club in the capital of a country whose president (Liu Shao-chi) is remembered for saying that "China was a great power and had to punish India once" the place for even the most irresponsible politician to wash domestic dirty linen. If some of the quoted remarks were made in confidence, that too is a sign of immaturity. As John Kenneth Galbraith says in one of his novels, anybody can have an opinion but officers of State have a position. English in China is not a mangled lingua franca peppered with indigenous words, prefixes and suffixes. Only 0.77 per cent of the Chinese speak the language against India's 21.09 per cent, but those few are remarkably proficient. A linguistic expert attributed the impressive diction and vocabulary of mainland Chinese members of Oxford's Asia-Pacific Society to being taught English as a foreign language which, apparently, minimizes infection from the mother tongue, as in Hinglish or Singlish. Also, Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou have replicas of Dulwich College, alma mater of the creator of Bertie Wooster, the quintessential Englishman. Not that language matters all that much in this age of instant translation. In fact, the English cite the story of Madame de Gaulle saying she wanted "a penis" and being corrected by her husband ("I think, my dear, they pronounce it 'appiness!") to warn foreigners to stick to their own tongue. Atal Bihari Vajpayee did just that on public occasions, including his United Nations address, though perfectly easy in English in private conversation. As for the supposed "negotiating skills" that "bailed out" the Chinese at the climate talks, it may be impolitic to recall that Beijing upstaged New Delhi at almost every turn of the Sino-Indian negotiations from 1947 to 1962. Bandung allowed Zhou Enlai to establish a reputation for skilful propaganda at Jawaharlal Nehru's expense. Every global contretemps from Vietnam's invasion of Cambodia to the Nuclear Suppliers Group's hesitation over endorsing India demonstrates China's ability to mobilize world opinion without revealing its hand. India lost out over Myanmar's oil reserves. Its 'Look East' policy has to contend with the economic links that Deng Xiaoping established with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The recent South Asian summit in Thimphu saw Wang Guangya, China's vice-foreign minister, persuasively arguing for a Chinese role in the region. If the Chinese sometimes seem to be under American pressure, that only further corroborates the "watchful waiting" that was Mao Zedong's refinement of Sun Tzu's strategy in the world's oldest military treatise. They know that the US is mortgaged to them. Reports suggest that his listeners in Beijing lapped up some of Ramesh's indiscretions while treating others with amused contempt. They could afford to let the presumptuousness of his claim that "Chinese leaders now regard India as a crucial partner in the global arena" pass. However, the "now" is intriguing. Did this halcyon era in bilateral relations with a China dazzled by India's linguistic and negotiating finesse and hoping that both will guide it through the thickets of world affairs start with Ramesh's visit? It might be unfair to attribute his championship of a Chinese telecommunications corporation seeking an entrée in India to any special interest or hidden agenda. It's just that our politicians cannot help courting instant popularity. Ramesh's on-the-record denigration of Indians (all talk and no work while the Chinese work without talking) must have been music to Chinese ears. Lal Krishna Advani's Pakistan visit, when he suddenly reneged on everything he and his party had stood for until then, provided an example of the same weakness. Nor was that the first instance of playing to the gallery. Shankar Dayal Sharma caused a stir by addressing Mayo College alumni as "Your Highnesses". Later, the vice-president, as he then was, explained disarmingly that having fought and vanquished the princes, especially his former suzerain, the Nawab of Bhopal, he could afford to show them magnanimity. Someone who knew Sharma better added afterwards that standing on the rostrum facing the princes, he just couldn't help saying what he knew they craved to hear. As Oscar Wilde might have said, politicians can resist everything except temptation. Perhaps the frailty is not confined to politicians. Perhaps it's a national characteristic, witness the Indian in A Passage to India who readily acceded to the Englishwoman's wish to visit him on a particular day he knew he wouldn't be there. He thought it impolite to put her off, not being farsighted enough to realize that being found out when the woman called would damage his credibility much more. India's political and diplomatic representatives on the international circuit long ago gained a reputation for duplicity when, poor things, they were just trying to be nice. A more serious explanation for Ramesh's comments may have been the calculation that they would be noted in New Delhi and remembered when the time came for re-nomination and promotion. The Chinese must be familiar with such durbari tactics. China's 15 accredited correspondents here (including six representing the Xinhua news agency, three for People's Daily and two from China Radio International), to say nothing of unofficial conduits, keep Beijing well posted. The Chinese are so indefatigable about information that someone from Beijing's Caixin media turned up when I was speaking in London on India and Southeast Asia, explaining that her "purpose was just to deepen (her) knowledge on the geopolitical issues around South-east Asia". India has only four journalists in China and they probably don't know Chinese. In any case, the tone of debate here is set by domestic reporters who periodically report clashes and intrusions and help maintain a state of tension in the public mind. Some of these reports are officially denied but the damage is done by then. Some, like the picture of a boulder in Indian territory that the Chinese ideograms on it claimed as Chinese, continue to inflame opinion. No one took notice of China's defence that the picture doesn't indicate the boulder's location and that the inscription reads "Middle Section of Yellow River" which is 1,000 miles from the border. The "historic need" for India and China to work together (Manmohan Singh's words) is not best served by someone who lives up to his own definition that "Indians talk and talk and keep on talking". This combination of a joker in the ministerial pack and sloppy or tendentious reporting ensures that China need not take India seriously. That would be as big a setback for Asia as Bomdila. | |
