Respected Sir
SUB: Appeal for Urgent Action To Diffuse Situation In The Border Areas Of Manipur And Nagaland, Following Firing On Unarmed Citizens Causing Several Casualties And Injuries.
We like to bring to your kind notice the recent disturbing events in Manipur triggered by the proposed visit of Mr. Thuingaleng Muivah to his native village Somdal in Manipur. Understandably there are reactions supporting and opposing this move of Mr. Muivah. However, it is sad to note that the ultimate victims of such conflicting reactions between the permission given to Mr. Muivah to visit his village and the government of Manipur banning it are innocent people in Manipur.
We understand that the blockade imposed by AMUCO on vehicle movement and the strikes by the United Naga Council of Manipur has resulted in shortage of food and other essential needs of the people as well as in loss of life and wounding of women. Without trying to point out who is right and who is wrong in these assertions of rights we like to draw your attention to the inhuman sufferings that this has caused to people who have not much to do with this conflict.
The stiffening of stand by Mr. Ibobi Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur and its consequences have also invited the intervention of armed forces into the village and there are disturbing news of innocent people being killed and women have been wounded in firing and have been hospitalized in Mao. It was only after much effort that even RED CROSS was allowed to step in to help the wounded. Ordinary people are still suffering much without adequate provisions of food.
We appeal to you to kindly take strong measures to immediately restore normalcy to the region so that essential commodities may be made available to the people of the region.
We appeal to you to immediately withdraw the armed forces from the region, who according to reports that we have received are using brute force on innocent people.
We also appeal to you to order the complete withdrawal of the special powers granted to armed forces in Manipur through AFSPA. We believe strongly that the problems of Manipur can be resolved by democratic means and creative peaceful measures that can ensure the human rights of all people. We stand against the use of military forces and armed violence to resolve the issues that arise our of legitimate demands of communities of people.
Thanking you
