NOUAKCHOTT: Police in Mauritania have arrested a suspected terrorist
accused of belonging to a group with ties to Al-Qaeda's North
African branch, security force sources said Sunday. Dahoud Ould
Sebty, who is said to be responsible for communication within the
Ansar Allah group, was arrested in his car in the Mauritanian
capital of Nouakchott late Saturday, the sources, who declined to be
identified, told AFP. The alleged leaders of Ansar Allah were
arrested in a raid on April 30 but Ould Sebty remained at large.
According to the Mauritanian magazine Tehalil Hebdo, usually very
well informed on Islamist groups in the West African country, Ould
Sebty was not present during a clash between his group and the
police on April 7 that left two Islamists and one police officer
dead. "He had just left the group [before the clash] after he
prepared a film announcing the creation of Ansar Allah," said the
magazine. Among the alleged leaders of Ansar Allah arrested late in
April were Al-Khadim Ould Essemman who is the main suspect in a
February attack on the Israeli Embassy in Mauritania which was
claimed by Al-Qaeda. Also linked to the group is Sidi Ould Sidna,
suspected of killing four French tourists here last December. - AFP
